Ballater Train Station Picks Up Pretigious Award

North Group are delighted to see that Aberdeenshire Council have picked up the South Eastern Commercial Restoration Award from HRH The Princess Royal at this year’s National Rail Heritage Awards for the restoration works carried out to Ballater Old Royal Station.

As part of the restoration of the B-listed station, which was destroyed by fire in May 2015, North Group were appointed by Aberdeenshire Council to carry out restoration and manufacturing works.

To help start the restoration process we photographed what remained of the structural fabric of the building, before recording and numbering everything that was being taken out of the remains of the Royal Waiting Room.

Items that were removed were carefully wrapped and stored, for either referencing items we were to remanufacture or that were to be salvaged and repaired. By doing this we were able to keep a record of where each item was within the room for relocation further down the line.

The team in our on-site joinery workshop then set about manufacturing new wall panelling that had been damaged in the fire to match what would have originally been on the walls, as well as the fireplace and doors.

As part of the restoration project, we also manufactured the bespoke joinery items for the library and Visit Scotland Information Centre.

This was an exciting and unique restoration project to be involved in and a brilliant example of the type of bespoke joinery works our team can produce.
